Song Of The Week – Dave Stewart and The Spiritual Cowboys, Spiritual Love

spiritualloveSpiritual love (1990)

Spiritual love that’s what we want
Spiritual love that’s what we need
Spiritual love that’s what we always wanted
Spiritual love is spiritual love
And we’re living in a wasteland with a cancer
so deep rooted in the hearts of all men
what we need is a little miracle
well here it comes

In 1990 Dave Stewart and the Spiritual Cowboys released their self titled album, consisting of 14 songs. Each one deals with a different theme, although the songs are also, in one way or the other, connected through a mutual context or way of seeing life. When you discuss Dave Stewart and the Spiritual Cowboys I think it’s important to emphasize the ”spiritual philosophy” incorporated in the music, as well as in the symbolistic imagery. This point should not be undermined!

Dave Stewart himself explained in a TV-show on Swedish television in the early 90’s that the world of the Spiritual Cowboys had ”nothing to do with the religious thing”, instead it should be regarded as ”a world of spirituality”. He explained furhter:

”The world is just living a lifestyle that’s being sold to them by corporations and advertising companies and everybody actually forgotten that they just living part of a movie and there’s something really missing in the souls of people at the moment. /—/ I sing about the wasteland that we’re living in and the sickness that’s inherent of most men nowadays. And then I sometimes resolve it with… the only solution is some kind of spiritual love that people could share with each other and actually get to know themselves as well as each other.”

And he said: I love you
And I said: I love you too

It seems to me a mistake to dismiss Dave Stewart and the Spiritual Cowboys, as has been done on occasions, as just a new postmodern hippie band lacking real substance and originality. On the contrary I would say, Stewart’s songs are often emotionally striking and lyrically and musically complex. The last song on the album  – Spiritual love – in a way summarizes the whole philosophy behind Dave Stewart and the Spiritual Cowboys and therefore I regard it as a key song. The ”message” seems to be: The world is depleted and impoverished enough and now it’s high time for us to reclaim it. And this we can do by relearning to express the emotions of life.

To free the world, it’s an emotion away. To free the world, you must free your mind”. To free the world in an emotional way. To free the world from the blind leading the blind.

Stewart’s clever use of ”The Inspirational Choir” also gives the song a spiritual feel and definitely adds an extra dimension to the message. Spiritual love is ultimately a celebration of life, real life
