Summertime, the new live performance video from Annie Lennox has been released today via The Wall Street Journal.

When Annie Lennox set out to record an album of standards, she fully intended to avoid “Summertime.”

“I think we’re all sick to death of the song, really,” Lennox tells Speakeasy with a chuckle. “Not the song, per se, but it has been played to death. In my mind, I thought, it’s been tired, it’s wrung out, it can’t have any more life to it, because it’s been done enough.”

Wouldn’t you know it, Speakeasy today premieres a video of Lennox performing her version of the Gershwins tune from “Porgy and Bess.” So what happened?

“I started to record it, just for my own interest, just to give it a shot, and then it all came to life for me,” she says. “I recorded it very easily, all in one take. I wasn’t doing it in a calculated way by any means, it was very intuitive.”
